Time to catch up

I think about adding to this blog all the time.  Then I think about how far behind I am and don't know where to begin. Then I see all these 'Pins' about how to do your blog 'right.'  So it just never happens.  Maybe sometime soon I'll get in a routine and add some entries.  And I guess it's just best to start where I am.

Elizabeth and Julia turned three this month.  A friend taught me how to work with fondant and I made some pretty cute cakes.  The girls seem to have gotten amazingly easier/older so suddenly.  I now have time during the day to get a few things done while they play.  They play house most of the day, taking turns at being mommy.  Then they whine at whomever is mom.  That makes me laugh!  Their babies finally have names.  Usually it's cousin Wyatt, occasionally his new baby sister Charolotte and sometimes Savannah (because we told Rachael we almost named her that).  Rachael is fascinated with when she was born and asks a lot of questions about it.  And they love playing dress up.  This week during a dress up session Rachael wanted to try on my wedding dress so I let her.  These pictures might be fun on her wedding day!  

We just got Rachael registered for kindergarten next year!  Hard to believe she will be that old.  I'm nervous and excited for her to go.  She does pretty well in preschool this year, as long as you let her do things on her own time frame.  And she is getting better at staying focused at dance.  So I think she's ready.

In my newly acquired spare time I have been really enjoying smocking and sewing.  First I finished the red rose bishop's dress that was my inspiration in the very beginning to want to learn smocking.  I still love the dress.  Ellie is wearing it.  The other one I made when Rachael was this size.

And I love the red sweaters my friend Kathy made to go with the dresses.

The pink and brown smocked dresses Camille made for them fit now too.  Aren't they the best dressed girls in town?  And doesn't Ellie have curls to die for?  All natural!

Then  I made a bunch of baby gifts including a cute bonnet for baby Charlotte.

And now I'm working on the girls Easter dresses.  The dresses will be early 1900 Downton Abby inspired dresses I'm very excited about.  I love doing the embroidery and I'm learning a lot about heirloom sewing techniques so it's been a lot of fun.  I can't wait to get them finished and see them on the girls. They all way more than a little girls needs.  But I really enjoy the work.

Summer Sewing

To keep my self entertained this spring and summer I've been sewing the girls cute little dresses.  I think they are adorable!  It does get a little old by the time you get the third one finished, but I love them when I put them on my little darlings.  I'm trying to get all my fun sewing in before they get too old and refuse to wear what I sew.  Rachael is already getting very hard to convince when I want to choose what she wears!  I've been really addicted to the ruffle bottoms on the babies this summer.  I think they are adorable!

One more attempt to get going...

I really think I'm ready to get going on this blog...hahaha...I think I say that every year, but maybe, just maybe this year it will stick.  The babies are 17 months now, they sleep well and play with Rachael some so really, I should have some time, right?

We just had a big weekend.  We went to dinner with some of my friends from highschool.  When we got home the babysitters had gotten all three girls to sleep!  That is a first and very exciting!  The next morning Rachael called out for Abby instead of me when she woke up.  Then she came out of her room to the top of the stairs and got mad because Abby wasn't here.  But I take that as a good sign and I'm not too crushed.

Last week Rachael started swimming lessons.  I take one of the babies at a time to the wading pool during Rachael's lesson while Christian watches the other one at home.  So far the babies have screamed every day.  Friday Todd had to take Rachael since I had a hair cut appointment.  That day they tried to put life vests on the students.  Rachael and the baby were screaming so Todd left.  I can't decide if we should go back for lessons this week.  I guess I'll see when they all wake up.  (Mornings are beautiful when everyone is asleep in their own bed!)

I guess it's time for my annual post again!  I hope one day to make this occurance happen just a little more often...but so many things to do and not enough time!  So this isn't a very interesting post, just a few things I want to remember.

It's been a wonderful and rough year all at the same time.  The babies are now 15 months old and a world easier to take care of.  Rachael will be 3 tomorrow.  I'm not sure she is any easier (she's a screamer and in the middle of terrible 2 tantrums-they started late).  But we have fun between the moments of crisis.

Rachael loves matchbox cars, dolls, necklaces & make-believe.  She sings to herself constantly, but it's difficult to get her to sing to me.  She still struggles with going to bed by herself, she wants Daddy to sit at his computer next to her room until she falls asleep.  She was a late walker and talker, but is speaking much better now.

Ellie starting walking a few weeks ago.  She loves going up and down the stairs and has been doing that for a long time.  She has lots of teeth and loves to eat anything, anytime, anywhere but hasn't been interested in a bottle for quite awhile..  She says "bye", and "hi." 

Julia has been walking for over almost 2 months, but just started going down stairs last week.  She doesn't have as many teeth and is much more skeptical about her food.  She does like food better if she can feed herself and is fascinated with using a spoon.  She just gave up her last bottle in the evening last week.  She says "bye", "up", "hi", "peek-a-boo", "thankyou", "beep" (when she touches your nose), "ToJo" (grandpa's dog) and probably a few more things I just haven't figured out yet.

The babies play so much better on their own now, but do fight over toys on occasion and like to bite each other when they do!  They are allowing me a little time each day so I've started sewing a little.  I'm loving having a little time to do something creative and I hope to do more soon.

It's been almost a year since I last posted. I had such great intentions for this blog (like most things...). But in the past year we built a new house, Rachael just turned two and had twins! Yes, twins!! They are three months old now and we are just starting to recover...well, sort of. But they are beautiful and healthy and a blessing to our family. So I am going to make another attempt, once again at this blog! Can't wait to tell you all more about everything.

Just got to find the right motivation...

I have been trying for several years now to get Alex to stop wiping his hands on his clothes while he is eating. Nothing has worked. So last week I told him if I caught him wiping his hands on his clothes he would have to pay me a quarter. After a few days he said “Ann, I haven’t wiped my hands on me for 3 days!” I enthusiastically responded with all the accolades I could. To which he responded, “I think I didn’t stop before because there was no punishment.” Aarrg!

It’s my birthday! Drove to Salt Lake for a meeting, took Alex to swimming lessons and someone came to look at our house (which is up for sale) so we had to go out for dinner. Darn! Really not too exciting. But I did get my FAVORITE white hot chocolate from my friend Marilyn. Thank you so much, Marilyn!! It’s the most incredible drink you can only get at Pannikin in San Diego. Jacob (our 11 year old) and I were just reminiscing about it on Saturday, how wonderful it is and how we wished we had some on that rainy day. Now I do!

There are few things better than a warm drink on a rainy day. Drinks of choice are White Heat, fresh mint tea, and Berry Patch tea. All have a special memory attached which makes them all the better. Pick up a warm cup of White Heat and then head down to see the seals at the Children’s pool in San Diego with all of my out of town guests. A rainy afternoon in China with Coreen, sitting in a café that’s trying to be European (the attempt is humorous but that creates even more memories), sipping fresh mint tea. And Rose, playing Mum, teaching us just how to hold our tea cup so while exclaiming “there’s nothing like a cup of tea” (referring to the chink of the cup on the saucer) with such fondness and pleasure that you can’t help but love it yourself too. I can’t wait for our new house to be completed so that we can move in and I can unpack all my china and teacups. This winter I promise myself to invite friends over for tea and conversation on a cold winter day.

Is there anything better than a memory that includes food? When the mere mention of the food brings back a flood of tastes on the tip of your tongue and a warm spot in your heart for whoever was with you? Of course, if I didn’t love food and food memories so much I wouldn’t be wondering why I can’t lose those extra few pounds all the time! Oh the trade-offs we must endure!

I really hope I can get my camera fixed soon or this blog isn’t going to get very interesting…

Summer Cooking with the Boys

My first summer with the boys I cooked all my favorite summer dishes. Lots of salads and cool summer meals. They hated most of them. So the next summer, thanks to a great idea from my friend Crystal, we started the Thumbs Up cookbook. Each boy was assigned a night to cook. We selected a number of categories for our cookbook and they each had to find a recipe to try for each category. After tasting dinner we had a family vote. Four out of six thumbs up and the recipe went in the cookbook. At the end of the summer the boy with the most recipes in the book won a prize. And there were prized for each category. This was amazing! It solved all the complaints. We got to try new things. Some of the recipes I had even made for them before, but since it was their idea, they actually liked them this time. The following summer the boys talked me into assigning them dishes on the same night they cooked. That was a bad idea. They wouldn’t cook anything that used more than one dish. They were over the competition aspect and we ended up eating the same thing every week.

I needed a new approach for this summer. So I went through my cookbooks and planned the entire summer. I picked meals most of them like (lots of variations of tacos). Nothing gets repeated except their 3 favorites: Ribs, hotwings and hamburgers. The boys still help 4 nights of the cooking. Todd BBQ’s on Fridays. Saturday is left overs or date night and I cook on Sundays. One night during the week I added a new recipe to try. Jacob really wanted to try things from different countries so we still get to experiment a bit. I told them if they didn’t want to cook what I had on the menu they could find a new recipe to try as long as they let me know before I do the shopping. So far it’s working great. I am the soux chef for the boys on their cooking night. I do lots of the chopping, prep and clean up as we go so they enjoy the cooking experience. And I have fun with them.

This week we have had Pizza Joes (sloppy joes with pizza sauce), tried a new Vietnamese shrimp salad and Skillet Tacos. Tonight Christian gets to make his favorite Alfredo (he’s quite good at it-from scratch even) and tomorrow Todd smokes ribs. I love it. I don’t have to think about what to eat and the boys seem to do better when I post the menu for the week. I think I freaked them out the first summer and they are always worried about what I am going to feed them.

I had full intentions of blogging when I created this account nine months ago. I don’t know what happened. Rachael was too much fun, we started building a new house and I discovered Facebook; all big time consumers. But I think now I am ready to commit to blogging. I liked the suggestion from my friend Amy, that writing is good for you. I could use that. When I was working I always felt like writing was the hardest part for me. Now that I’m not working and my skills keep deteriorating, my writing is getting even worse. So this will be good for me! Now I just have to decide where to start!

I named this blog Cutler Capers. Life since I became a Cutler. Yes, things have changed. The great part is that I am experiencing things I never thought I would be able to. I am learning. I am seeing a new part of life and I love it. Sometimes the learning is difficult. It isn’t always fun. But it feels right, it feels peaceful and it is rewarding. There are days when I still miss San Diego. I miss my friends. I miss good restaurants. I miss traveling with the girls. I miss fun and familiar things around San Diego. I miss going to lunch.

I thought I would miss a paycheck more than I do. When there isn’t anywhere fun to shop, you really don’t miss having money! And there are so many other things to keep me busy and out of trouble. I just put my budgeting skills to work and I am able to save for most things I want. It’s a great feeling to be able to save and buy what you want. I love that budgeting works. It’s sometimes a tedious task and I have to remind my husband that I am counting pennies when he wants something I think is useless (ha-ha, good thing he doesn’t see my occasional useless purchase). It’s also fortunate that we really like our own cooking better than most restaurants around here. So we save a lot of money there.

Start Blogging

I've been taking a break from the world for a while, focusing on my new joy and delight, Rachael Ann. Now I'm ready to try a few things such as this blog, but not too many, Rachael is too much fun!

Rachael will be 4 months old next week. It's hard to believe she is growing so fast. She was a bit colicky the first couple of months. Now she is just fun! She smiles and talks, and giggles just a bit. And we think she is the most beautiful baby in the world, of course!
